Empirical Study on Ethnic Intermarriage in Taiwan, 2005

There used to be household registration data on the percentage of the major four Taiwanese ethnic groups. However, based on the amended Household Registration Law in 1992, only indigenous people and their tribes are identified in the database. While the distinct categorization among the four groups blurred overnight, the four groups remain.

In order to understand the population percentage among the four groups, it’s necessary to understand the inter-group marriage. In this research, it has found that the tradition of father-based assimilation has been changing, mainly due to inter-group marriages. In today’s political climate, Taiwan- priority is the mainstream and Min-Nan is the dominant group, so that as long as Min-Nan group is part of a marriage, the next generation assimilates more often with the Min-Nan culture, regardless of the origin of the father. This trend is very different from the past and should be closely monitored.
