The Past and Future of the Critical Geopolitics and Its Implication on Taiwan's Geopolitical Imagination
(Ta-Hua Mo)

Due to the influence of the third Great Debate on International Relations Theory in the 1980s, scholars in Geopolitics and International Relations have brought the debates of metatheory into geopolitical research. They have used Post structuralism, Postmodernism, and Critical Theory philosophical foundations to question traditional geopolitics about its ontological and epistemological assumptions, to destructure its perspectives on world politics, and to challenge its state-centered political practices. Therefore, they have been called the Critical Geopolitics or Postmodern Geopolitics. The Critical Geopolitics wishes to destructure the hegemonic geopolitical discourses of the major powers and to question the power relations expressed by the major powers in political practices of the world.

Critical Geopolitics has influenced the directions and contents of geopolitics, and has also extended the research agenda of geopolitics However, it needs much pertinent efforts to change the main courses of geopolitics and world politics. Even though, there are some implications for geopolitical imagination of Taiwan, to provide a different critical geopolitical discourse.
